From the first moment Marco Rubio toppled Charlie Crist in a senate primary in 2010, pundits have declared him a golden boy destined for a run at the White House. Rubio’s spent the last two years positioning himself for a national campaign, and a couple days ago Republican voters picked Rubio as their favorite veep candidate.
Mitt Romeny had different ideas. At 7 a.m. this morning, Romney announced via a phone app that he’d picked Rep. Paul Ryan from Wisconsin as his running mate.
Romney called Ryan a “man for the moment,” citing his stark budget — which calls for huge reductions in federal spending — as a vision for America’s future.
“Mitt Romney is a leader with the skills, the background and the character that our country needs at a crucial time in its history,” Ryan said after the announcement. “Following four years of failed leadership, the hopes of our country, which have inspired the world, are growing dim; and they need someone to revive them.”
Rubio was gracious about the pick reportedly tweeting, “@MittRomney has made a great choice picking @RepPaulRyan for #VP.”
As we wrote yesterday, Rubio can take solace in the fact that he’s just the latest in a long line of prominent Florida politicos touted for a VP slot to get passed over.
