What’s So Good About Best?

Dicey spice: Not sure why you voted Pimiento’s for Best Tapas (“Best of Miami 2010,” New Times staff, June 17). The food is less than mediocre and completely forgettable. The menu sounds better than what actually comes out of the kitchen, the music is way too loud, and you get very small portions for what you actually pay. One good note: They have a courteous staff. And the wine selection is adequate.

On cue: Great to see Sharp Shooters Billiards got Best Place to Play Pool. I have seen famous people like Jeanette Lee, the Black Widow, and the late Steve Mizerak playing there. You never know who will walk in. Congratulations.

Kicking back: Your take on Lou’s Beer Garden (Best New Bar/North) is so true! I wandered in there on a lazy Sunday with a few friends and neighbors fresh off the beach in flip-flops and fit right in to the relaxed but perfectly designed atmosphere. We racked up quite a bill sampling a wide variety of inexpensive brews and “nosh,” and finished our drinks with our feet cooling in the pool. Good times. Well done!

SoBe wannabe: Bardot (Best Neighborhood Bar/Central) is good only if you don’t feel like driving to South Beach but still want to be surrounded by douchebags. This place was neat when it first opened — 420-friendly, free pool, pinball machine. Now it’s just a South Beach wannabe — popped collars, door guy, guest lists, rude bartenders. Oh, Bardouche, how far you’ve fallen!

Feature act: I truly cannot understand why there wasn’t an article written about Eruption, the readers’ choice for Best Band. Why even bother asking people to vote if you have clearly chosen for us! I am sure Afrobeta is a great band, and I am looking forward to seeing them, but it seems incredibly unfair not to feature the Readers’ Poll winners.

Bad joke: RA Sushi is the Best Restaurant in South Miami-Dade? Are you serious? Is this the April 1 issue? RA Sushi is deplorable. A hideous excuse for a “sushi” menu. This is the crappiest food around, there’s terrible service, and it caters to the lowest common denominator, which, apparently, New Times has chosen to subscribe to as well. Barf!

Ditto: I’m flabbergasted. The sushi at RA is terrible. Miyako, which is directly across the street, is much better. And the service is only so-so. There are at least five better restaurants on Sunset Drive alone. The only redeeming quality is that it’s a decent pick-up spot for happy hour.

Home-baked: It’s pretty funny that with all the excellent cupcake places in Miami (LA Sweets, Buttercream, Sweetness, Misha’s, Sugar Mama’s, just to name a few), the one that wins Best Cupcakes doesn’t even have a storefront but operates out of a home.

Political muscle: You guys are a bunch of douches. You give Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff shit for actually giving us a good return on our tax dollars by creating an outdoor gym at Kennedy Park (Best Public Works Project). My wife and I see Sarnoff working out at the park all the time. The equipment is great, and it gets a lot of use.

Revving to run: The “reverend” (Rev. Richard Dunn, Best Political Comeback) accepts this position on the condition that he will not run again, and turns around and immediately announces he is running again. If he lied on his first act as commissioner, why should we trust him? I say we dump this chump.

Great aunt: I have always loved to browse through the treasures at Las Tias (Best Secondhand Store) and find that one special, memorable piece. My clients love to do the schlepping, and when we find something, it becomes the topic of conversation at the next cocktail party. I have also suggested Las Tias to friends and clients. It is a destination every time we go to the Design District.
